Why it’s here: Difficulty, most memorable.
James Forrest was a good college player. He won ACC Freshman of the Year in 1992, ACC Tournament MVP in 1993, and made the All-ACC first team in 1994. But it was his miraculous 3-point heave in the second round againt USC and Harold “Baby Jordan” Minor, that made Forrest a college basketball legend.
Trailing by two with only 0.8 seconds left, Forrest took an inbounds pass deep on the left wing, and seemingly in one-motion, turned and flicked a three-pointer. It was nothing but net, and the crowd erupted. But this play has earned all-time status thanks to the late Al McGuirre’s great “Holy Mackerel! Holy Mackerel! Holy Mackerel!” call. It is forever recognized as one of the tournament’s best moments.
Strangely, enough, it was Forrest’s first and only three-pointer of the year.
